Google New Launched Program for Students: Code-In

Are you a computer geek? Are you in between 13-18 year old? Are you eager to have a real and hands-on experience on IT-related tasks? If you nodded your head right after those questions, Google Code-in is wholly suitable for you to stuff up your tedious and agonizing school holiday.

Google Code-in is an open source development and outreach contest targeted at 13-18 year old students around the world. Of course, it's not the first time that Google embark on this kind of program. Google had run a pilot program called the Google Highly Open Participation Contest during 2007 to 2008, which gave 400 students around the world an opportunity to help out open source projects on the following kinds of tasks:

1. Code: Tasks related to writing or refactoring code
2. Documentation: Tasks related to creating/editing documents
3. Outreach: Tasks related to community management and outreach/marketing
4. Quality Assurance: Tasks related to testing and ensuring code is of high quality
5. Research: Tasks related to studying a problem and recommending solutions
6. Training: Tasks related to helping others learn more
7: Translation: Tasks related to localization
8: User Interface: Tasks related to user experiencec research or user interface design and interaction.

Since it was a huge success for Google at that episode, it's no doubt that Google fervently sets out to move its big stride to another milestone again with the contest with its new name, Google Code-In.

So, what are you waiting for? Check out its official website for more information.

P/S: Darned, I just slightly older than the age range of being the participant :(

Extension: Asian Science Camp 2010

Yup, like what I promised in my last thread, here are some more interesting stories and experiences happened during Asian Science Camp 2010 that I intend to share with you all :D

-I was so surprised that Ritesh and his friends knocked my room's door when I was sleeping at HBCSE. I don't even know my blog is getting higher page rank in Google right now~Thanks for you support! :D

-I felt so lucky that I had the exclusive sightseeing at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education which other partipants didn't have. Thanks Mohit from India for the best hospitality.

-When I was first log-in to the Facebook in India, it required me to pass throught a security progress which was a seven/five(I forgot already) 'Face-recognized' questions. I was compelled to recognize my friends' faces in 'Tagged' photos in order to get access to Facebook. Quite funny but I really witnessed the effort of Facebook team in privacy control.

-I bought a four-hour wifi-internet service in Tunga Hotel, but eventually they didn't charge me when I checked out~ Haha^^

-Continue the last stories, it seems quite difficult or impossible to get free internet service in Mumbai even at airport or hotel. Hmm, same with what I saw from some statistics reference.

-When we were using the internet service in provided computer room after dinner, one of Kazakhstan participant came close to ask Hong Kong friends about the Cantonese phrases. We taught him some 'interesting' phrases and he kept talking those 'interesting' phrases to his friends, we all burst out laughing at that moment! "样衰~" XD Even when I'm recalling it recently, I still can't help laughing about that~Haha, Full of funs and joyfulness, really a precious moment :D

-I felt very sorry that I was sleeping during some lectures or camps @@ Quite regret afterwards.

-I was so excited that ASC just like a platform full about sharing ultimate goal. Met with the people who holding the same idea and spirit was such a wonderful interaction. We exchanged our prespective in education system, development of countries and so forth. It led me to an ever profound comtemplation, I really learnt a lot. P/S: I saw someone who brought along the Common Application during ASC :D Some guys had already gained the admission to those my dream schools and some of them will going to strive for the upcoming Fall intake. It directly caught up my sight with familiarity which was the same progress I just underwent last year.

-I was so regret that I spent too less during the journey in Mumbai. Because when I exchanged India Rupee back to Malaysia Ringgit, I finally realized that the currency loss would make such a big 'impact' to my money ==

-Sorry for all the dude's invitation at that last crazy-dancing night. I try to make myself into dancing pool a short period, but I was really exhausted in both physcially and mentally. Especially as my lovely Hong Kong friends were leaving, really missed you right that time :D

-Special thanks to Hong Kong friends. Michelle, Cherry, Kelvin, Kimchi, Hong. You were so impressive, lovely, kind and helpful. Full of jokes and laughs when meeting with you all. Keep it up! Looking forward to meet with you again :)

-Credit all the friends, teachers, lectures and all the people from various countries who I met during Asian Science Camp 2010. Sorry for couldn't listed down all of you as it will be a 'long' list to go with. Hope you all receive my truly gratefulness & appreciation.

-Special thanks to my team members, they were Kaushik (India), Shaun Lim (Singapore), Kelvin (Hong Kong), Han Yu (China). You guys were so amazing! I shared my experience in poster preparation, Han Yu started citing out the idea, Shaun implemented it by using scientific evidence, Kaushik provided with solutions in our system's hindrance, I found out more informations through internet to reconstruct it and of course I won't never forget Kelvin's picture-cutting effort(Haha, just joke! Kelvin helped us a lot during group discussion and internet searching! :D). We just had few short meetings and ended up all the things within three hours in last minute of time~ Such a high efficiency work! And our effort eventually appreciated by judges as a Bronze Medal, cheer it up guy! :D

-For those my friends who curious about my poster presentation, here you are:

'Photo-Chemiosmotic Cells: Green Energy Redefined': Designing of a solar powered cell based on cyclic photophosphorylation and chemiosmosis in plant thylakoids, using relative charge concentrations across a hydrophobic membrane.
Quote from Shaun Lim :D

The whole structure and the theory of my topic can refer to the attach

Reflection: Asian Science Camp 2010

Asian Science Camp 2010, Mumbai, India.
http://asc2010.hbcse.tifr.res.in/

Hoping and wishing, wishing and hoping. I couldn't help wondering that I finally completed my Asian Science Camp 2010 journey. A journey like dreaming, which pierces through my mind everyday, every minute, every second and this dream will never stop. It is really very difficult to convey all of the amazing moments at ASC 2010 right here by using the combinations of words and sentenses. If there have a ranking to cite out the best moment in my 19-year-old life, ASC 2010 would inevitably reveal at the top of my mind!

Here is only the fraction of my 'official' reflection of Asian Science Camp 2010, of course, more interesting stories will catch up soon. Stay tuned :D

Introduction:

The fourth Asian Science Camp was held in Mumbai, India. The previous camps were successfully held at Taipei (2007), Bali (2008), Japan (2009). One hundred and ninety eight students from seventeen countries across Asia and ten distinguished scientists including two Nobel laureates participated in the camp. At the Asian Science Camp, the students get an opportunity to engage in discussion and dialogue with top scholars in the world and also to interact with their peers from other Asian countries. The program includes plenary lectures and camps which are small group interactive sessions. This is followed by a poster competition in which teams composed of students from different countries collaboratively make posters inspired by the talks and discussions with the leaders.

On 15 August 2010, Malaysia delegates to the ASC 2010 gathered at KLIA for our departure to Mumbai, India. They were Bessima (Kolej Mara), Afiqah (Kolej Mara), Jannah (UKM), Azrul (UM), Fatin(UT Mara), See Peng(USM) and me. Puan Ima from Kolej MARA Banting was assigned to supervise us along our trip to ASC 2010. Before departure, we were briefed and given useful guidance by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Jamil Maah.

We came back from Mumbai, India on the 23 August 2010 as entirely different individuals. The nine-day life spent at the Asian Science Camp 2010 really lead me to the literally life-changing experience.

During the lectures and camps, we were given the chance to learn and even discuss various recent scientific issues and topics with inspirational and idealistic scientists and Nobel Laureates. Those discussions and lectures forced my perspective to dilate many times over. Instead of thinking in feet and miles, suddenly my nineteenth-year-old mind was trying to consider millions of light years, curved space, hopping from Quantum Mechanics to Quark Model and back to the molecules of our body. Naturally, I was not entirely successful, but more important, the experience plunged me into a new realm of thought, visions of the vast science aspect floating in my mind.

At first, thinking of some latest topics that newly introduced, such as ‘Green Supercritical Fluids’ by Prof. Martyn Poliakoff. I delved into the obvious questions of ultimate meaning, an exceedingly elusive goal. Yet because of this errant speculation, my mind was churning with lots of new perspectives, which impelled me to have a totally fresh angle to find out the never-ending exploration of the natural phenomena. Apart from the scientific topics and lectures, Prof. Richard Ernst’s lecture ‘ Universities: The incubators of responsible and visionary leaders of society’ led our mind burst into the other kind of view on science research. From this lecture, we were reminded again of the important of ethic and attitude when we’re learning about science. Moreover, as the future generation, we must have the imperative responsibility to act so that the consequences of our action are compatible with the permanence of genuine human life on this planet.

On the 4th day of the camp, we had an excursion at the southern tip of the island city of Mumbai where the Tata Institute Fundamental Research Centre (TIFR), one of the premiere science research institutes of the country is located. During our excursions, we were given the precious opportunity to visit and witness the real-running laboratories inside the research centers, which those just normally can be see via textbooks in classes. By observing and listening from the researchers explained about the various laboratories, it really spiced up our mind of knowing the ultimate essence and goal of science research. What’s more, those gorgeous facilities inevitably rose up our interest to devote ourselves to scientific research as well.

On the other hand, Asian Science Camp not just only aiming to further encourage our interest in the exploration and researching of pure science knowledge, but also provides us with best opportunity to expose us into the Asian community in specific, and the world in general. From the process of discussing scientific topic to the simple daily conversation, we were able to interact and learn a lot from each other, enjoy the amazement of cross-country friendship. Even after few weeks of Asian Science Camp, we still stay connecting together by using Internet social application everyday.

Overall, more than ever, I gravitated toward science. Before went to the Asian Science Camp, I had been interested in science because it was tidy, neat. Suddenly, that interest was ablaze with a passion for truth, knowledge, and not just in science. Asian Science Camp 2010 incited me to contemplate truly for the first time to reevaluate my fundamental ability and ponder over my future life, which have become more confident and distinct than ever.

Imagine Cup 2010 Finals: Malaysian Teams Are En Route to Victory

It might have took them lots of efforts to reach there but we are pretty sure that every single of those sacrifices are totally worth it. Our own Team HDC of APIIT- UCTI are currently in the running to win top honors and cash prizes worth thousands of Ringgit after being chosen as one of the grand finalist in Software Design category of the annual Microsoft-sponsored Imagine Cup 2010 Finals in Warsaw, Poland.

They were not alone though as other Malaysian teams that accompanied them to Warsaw have also been doing quite well in a number of Imagine Cup-related events. One of them is Team Hypo of TAR College who has managed to secure 3rd place in Windows Phone 7 “Rockstar” Award while another one, Team TEC4Life of USM is one of the six finalist of the Envisioning 2020 Award.

Team HDC will be presenting creation - a health and dietary application called Project Apple - for the last time this coming Thursday, in front of a live audience at Warsaw Opera House which will determine their final standings at the event. I would like to wish them good luck and all the best! Really desire to be one of them! I will strive for it next year! Imagine Cup 2010, wait for me!! :D

Holiday Event(1):Johor State Independent Chinese School Athletics

Oops~finally realized my blog had been stopped not just some days ago~
No doubt,I am too busy to be in charge of some upcoming events such as school annual athletics and parents' day recently after a crazy holiday over. How a busy life enough, but I like it!Haha

Fine, let's talk about my holiday events~First,I attended to the Johor State Independent Chinese School Athletics as a representative of my school during 28/5 to 30/5.Unfortunately,I just didn't bring along my camera, cause a lack of the photo which over there.Actually,I got a bad memory over there,my body was no good enough to prove a better performance in the competition.Hence,I lost all, just only won a 20x150m group running over there.

However,Chong Hwa High School-my school done a great job at there. We won nine gold medal, eight silver medal and fifteen bronze medal, ranking as fourth over all the Johor State School.

Next, the school annually athletics coming, wish I can do my all the best,it just the only last chance that I can get a great result in my last year studying in Chong Hwa High School.
